At high power, the crimson-staining Paneth cells can be
seen at the base of the intestinal glands (crypts of Lieberkuhn). Subjacent to the muscularis mucosae,
portions of Brunner's glands can be seen in the submucosa.
Comment
Paneth cells are a histological marker of the small intestine. The secretory product of Paneth cells is an
antibacterial enzyme called lysozyme that degrades
bacterial cell walls.
