In this image, a secondary ossification center in the
epiphysis is seen above the growth plate. Note blood
vessels, perivascular osteoprogenitor cells,
hypertrophied chondrocytes and ossifying matrix in the
secondary ossification center.
Comment
While the epiphysis and metaphysis ossify, hyaline
cartilage remains in the growth plate until growth of long
bones is completed.
