Summary
Findings
In this high-power view of the muscularis propria, the parasympathetic ganglion cells of the myenteric plexus of Auerbach are evident between smooth muscle layers.

Comment
The intrinsic innervation of the digestive tract by the myenteric plexus is responsible for peristalsis. The submucosal plexus of Meissner, found in the connective tissue of the submucosa, is responsible for segmental contraction.

Preparation
Paraffin section, hematoxylin and eosin
