Summary
Findings
In the gastroduodenal junction, there is an abrupt transition in mucosal morphology. The smooth surface
of the gastric pylorus is distinct from that of the duodenum which contains numerous finger-like projections called villi. Note the pyloric sphincter and
the mucus-producing Brunner's glands in the submucosa of the duodenum.
Comment
The Brunner's glands secrete alkaline mucus that
neutralizes the acidic chyme coming from the stomach.
