Summary
Findings
This tumor is composed of numerous multinucleated giant cells mixed with round to spindle-shaped neoplastic cells with similar nuclei. Note the absence of fibrous stroma between the cells.
Impression
Giant cell tumor
Clinical Pathologic Correlation
The biologic behavior of this tumor is somewhat
unpredictable. Although it appears benign
histologically, it tends to recur after surgical
resection. Malignant transformation is rare but may
occur.
Pathology Pointer
Although multinucleated giant cells are prominent in this tumor, they are thought to result from the fusion of reactive monocytes. The neoplastic cells are believed to be the round to spindle-shaped cells.
