In this cross-sectional survey image of a portion of the
ureter, the lumen is shown lined by a mucosa consisting
of transitional epithelium and subjacent lamina propria
that sits upon a muscularis composed of smooth
muscle.
Comment
Ureters are muscular tubes lacking a true submucosa.
They propel urine from the kidney to the bladder by
peristalsis. In a relaxed state the epithelial lining is
folded.
