At medium magnification, the large, lighterstaining
granulosa lutein cells of a corpus luteum are evident. These cells contrast with the
darker-staining theca lutein cells that project into
the corpus luteum from the surrounding
connective tissue.
Comment
After a mature Graafian follicle ruptures at ovulation and releases its oocyte, the follicle collapses, becomes highly folded and transforms into a temporary endocrine gland called the corpus luteum.
