Summary
Findings
In this survey image of the ovarian cortex,
primordial follicles and primary follicles are seen subjacent to the capsule. Note also a developing
secondary follicle and a Graafian follicle deeper
in the cortex.
Comment
Ovarian follicles mature in response to the anterior pituitary hormone, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). While several secondary
follicles can develop simultaneously, usually
only one develops into a fully mature Graafian follicle.
