Summary
Findings
In this medium-power view of the surface of the distal region of the anus, stratified squamous keratinized epithelium is evident. Here, the epithelium and underlying dense irregularly arranged connective tissue (dermis) are similar to that seen elsewhere in the skin.

Comment
In contrast to the moist mucous membrane of the rectoanal junction, the distal portion of the anus is a surface epithelium and therefore the outer cells lack nuclei and are cornified.

Preparation
Paraffin section, hematoxylin and eosin

View
Medium-power light microscopy
