In this high-power view, note that the taste buds are
embedded in the stratified squamous epithelium on the
lateral margins of each foliate papilla. Taste buds
contain the neuroepithelial cells that are the receptors
for taste. Note the ducts of von Ebner's glands
projecting into the furrow between adjacent papillae.
Comment
Secretions from von Ebner's glands provide a medium in which the molecules that stimulate the taste buds are dissolved. These secretions also ensure that the fluid medium in the furrow is continuously flushed. The combination of stratified squamous epithelium and papillae with taste buds indicate that this section is from the tongue.
